Butterworth House

Address: 324 Somerset Street West

Construction date: 1893

Built in 1893 for Charles A. Butterworth, this heritage property is located on Somerset Street. Butterworth and his two brothers came from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and developed one of Ottawa’s largest hardware manufacturing and supply businesses.

Officially designated as a heritage property in 1980 by the City of Ottawa and the Province of Ontario, the house is an example of Queen Anne revival architecture.

In the early 1900s, Somerset Street was an affluent and fashionable middle class neighbourhood. In the 1930s, many houses on the street were converted into multiple units and business establishments. In 1987 the streetscape was revitalized with Victorian styled lamp standards and the area named Somerset Street Village.
